Studying at the Institute of Mathematics of TUL gave me, first of all, the opportunity to learn about mathematics, which is a truly fascinating field of science. My studies also opened up the perspective of academic work for me.

About the field of study
Applied mathematics is a combination of analytical thinking with computer skills. The general knowledge that students acquire allows them to apply mathematical methods to solve problems in modern economic sectors. Studies also allow you to gain knowledge in the field of computer science, thanks to which graduates are able to navigate in specialized programs such as R-Studio, Java, Excel or databases. Mathematics field of study, first-cycle has been divided into three specializations so that students can develop their passions in the best possible way. Those interested in the broad insurance industry, estimating the cost of loans and valuing securities will find themselves excellently in the specialization of financial and insurance mathematics. Business analytics enthusiasts who see themselves working in corporations or smaller companies will certainly be interested in the specialty mathematical methods of business data analysis. For those who want to work in industrial facilities dedicated to creating and analyzing models of various processes, we have prepared a specialty of the application of mathematics in the exact sciences. Through the subjects of general economics, students also master issues related to forecasting in business, financial markets and running their own business. They will also develop group work skills through coursework on interpersonal communication in the company.
The exact list of courses taught in each semester can be found on the website
Specializations:
- mathematical methods of business data analysis,
- financial and insurance mathematics,
- applications of mathematics in the sciences.
Graduate opinions
During my first class, I heard from one of the professors: "Mathematics teaches you to think." Indeed, studying mathematics allows one to acquire a number of very important competencies. Students learn to analyze, solve problems and perfect logical thinking, useful in almost any career path.
Competencies you will gain
About you
As Roger Bacon said: “Mathematics is the door and the key to learning.” The truth of this statement can be easily verified by choosing to study mathematics.
During your studies, you will gain knowledge of both exact and technical sciences. With this combination, you will be able to apply useful methods and processes from both fields to solve problems. In the study program we have prepared a number of specialized classes for you. The basics of probability and mathematical analysis will teach you to look at complex processes schematically, and classes in information technology and database systems will show you how to analyze various kinds of practical problems using IT tools. You will also learn programming and the basics of project management. With a range of elective subjects, you can choose topics of interest to you - personal finance, number theories and cryptography. You decide in which direction you want to develop.
