About the field of study

Industrial Biotechnology is a field of study taught entirely in English. Studies take place at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences and combine biological and technical sciences to make practical use of the ability of enzymes, organisms and cells to obtain products. The curriculum assumes the provision of specialized knowledge in biotechnology engineering. During the three semesters, students follow a program based on subjects in: Techniques of Biomolecules Analysis, Bioreactor Engineering and Advanced Bioinformatics. 

Industrial Biotechnology is a filed of study for people who are interested in using biological systems, living organisms and enzymes to create or modify certain products or technological processes. The interdisciplinary curriculum has been well evaluated by life-science employers and allows a student in this field to specify his or her own interests and make an informed decision about further professional development.

About you

Among the topics that Industrial Biotechnology tackles are biodegradable polymers. Plastics of this type find many applications, among which is the rational use of their ability to biodegrade with the participation of microorganisms and enzymes in the soil. Biodegradable polymers find their applications as packaging or inserts and films for disposable diapers, among others. 

Skills that boil down to the design and operation of biotechnology processes are becoming extremely sought after on the job market in an era of acting in accordance with the idea of sustainable business. By choosing second cycle studies in Industrial Biotechnology, you will learn not only to supervise the development of such activities, but also gain competence in the implementation of quality assurance systems, safety of modified foods and production management. You will be fully prepared in the selection and targeted (genetic) modification of organisms, as well as their optimal breeding, biosynthesis (biotransformation) and isolation of bioproducts. You will learn to construct modern, environmentally friendly bioproducts, produce bioenergy and design sustainable processes in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, energy and environmental industries, thanks to your knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that govern the processes that take place in living organisms, interacting with the environment.
