About the field of study

Functional materials are materials whose design and manufacture are guided by a well-defined goal - to give them specific properties that will enable them to perform the desired functions and realize the applications envisaged for them. The industry sector involved in the design and technologies for obtaining functional materials is moving toward increasing specialization. Technologies of modern functional materials are the answer to modern market requirements. Students learn to prepare smart solutions to make everyday life easier - materials that self-repair, with specific shape memory, as well as materials with specific surface properties. Students learn to modify glass wear surfaces to become "self-cleaning," produce more efficient light emitters, or increase the sensitivity and range of detectors in automatic vehicle parking systems. They produce self-healing coatings to protect the surface of metals and packaging equipped with tags to show the freshness of the packaged product. On the other hand, through the use of modern surface engineering techniques, they are able to refine infrared-reflective layers for work suit components, helmets with visors for firefighters, or layers for medical implants to protect against ion penetration into the human body. This is just a small slice of the vast possibilities that the functionalization of materials offers us.

About you

The temperature in Earth's orbit varies from -170°C to over 120°C, depending on the level of insolation. It's a big challenge to design and select materials for space vehicles, but nothing is impossible for students of Technologies of Modern Functional Materials. During the course of your studies, you will acquire knowledge and skills using modern laboratory and teaching facilities of a high standard, as well as the competence of the staff of specialists from two faculties of Lodz University of Technology - the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A large number of practical classes are carried out in close cooperation and contact with industry experts and based on real technological problems. This will allow you to learn about the specifics of working in production facilities in various industries already in college, as well as to get in touch with potential employers. You will do your internships at local industrial plants in various industries, which creates real prospects for later employment and makes it easier to take your first steps in the job market. In addition, you will gain knowledge and skills to design and manufacture a variety of materials, objects and devices - from color-changing toys for children, to self-healing protective coatings, to shielding against high-energy radiation, implants used in medicine, or composites for space technology. You will become a master engineer, desirable on the job market by companies that manufacture, process or use functional engineering materials.
